Edinburgh

A lovely walk around Inverness and we're off to Edinburgh to meet up with our Scotch Malt Whisky friends from Melbourne. We have an apartment in Grassmarket which is a trendy area with lots of pubs and eateries. Also favoured for Hens parties and Bucks nights....

Drive from Edinburgh

It was a cold drive across the Highlands. We stopped at Fort Augustus and Pitlochry on the way and it was a pretty easy drive. Found the apartment easily, then took the car back, not so easy, but not so bad.

View from Back Door

We have a view of the Castle from our back balcony and a selection of pets.... John left some peanuts out for the squirrel but the blackbirds ate them first!

Its still cold and incredibly windy. The blossoms are being stripped from the trees, so much so, it looks like snow.

We have been trying to visit The Palace of Holyroodhouse which is the Queen's official residence in Scotland for years now, but every time we come it's being used by the Royal family. This time, we cracked it lucky.

The Palace

Inner Garden

This palace has been used for successive Kings and Queens as a residence for centuries and is now used for State ceremonies and official entertaining. The Queen's Holyrood Week is usually held from the end of June when she and the Duke host a garden party for some 8,000 guests. The inaugural garden party was hosted by King George V and Queen Mary.

The remains of the Abbey, founded by King David I in 1128 stand by the palace. Despite being the burial place of several Scottish kings and the site of the coronation of Charles I in 1633, the abbey was abandoned in1768 after the roof fell in but the remains stand today as a backdrop to the palace.

We took a walk in the garden and had the obligatory tea and cake. Well, coffee and cake.

And then a bit of time for some silliness.....

It's a stately palace with lovely understated gardens, well worth the wait.
