Bobby was a Skye Terrier who belonged to John Gray, a night watchman for the Edinburgh Police. The two were inseparable for 2 years until John Gray died from tuberculosis. Bobby who lived a further 14 years was said to have spent the rest of his life sitting on his master's gave.
The gardener and the keeper of Greyfriars tried to evict Bobby on many occasions, but in the end took pity on him and built him a shelter and fed him regularly. Bobby never spent a night away from his master's grave even in the most dismal conditions.
Bobby sadly died in 1872.
He could not be buried within the cemetery itself because it was consecrated ground. Instead he was buried just inside the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard not far from John Gray's grave. People often drop sticks at his tombstone....sweet.
Johnn tried to whistle Bobby up. Sadly.......
